With a diverse and global community, the richness of language learning remains an important feature of our school. Offering five language options in total in addition to English and Arabic, our children can choose from one of four additional languages from Year 3 of the Primary phase.

In the primary phase of the school, we offer French, Spanish, German and Mandarin. A taster approach to all languages in Year 2 through a series of drop down days ensures that students have an appreciation of all of the options available, allowing them to then choose one for more detailed study as they move into Year 3.

In the secondary phase, students choose 2 languages with Italian being added to these options. These languages are taught as a second language but we do try to accommodate first language learners. In Year 9, students can then opt to continue with both languages, or choose to specialize in one of the two only. We encourage students to retain the study of a language through into the GCSE course options, but it is not a compulsory feature of the school in Year 10.

All of our language programmes aim to improve the students’ language learning skills by developing their proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, writing and performing whilst harnessing the diversity of the student body. There is a direct link to global and cultural awareness as part of the school’s overarching curriculum and our language programme further supports the possibilities for cultural exchange and overseas trips.

In addition, though not specifically taught by Hartland teachers, we also accommodate students in the study of their own Mother Tongues and our language teachers can support these discussions with parents accordingly.
