The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is the world’s leading youth achievement award, operating in over 160 countries and territories around the globe. Since the award was launched by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh 65 years ago, over 13 million young people have participated in the Award.
It is a prestigious award, highly valued by universities and employers alike, as it requires an individual to demonstrate a well-rounded set of skills that they have gained outside the classroom. Students gain hard and soft skills that they might not have previously been exposed to such as navigation, cooking, camping, perseverance, independence, confidence, self-sufficiency, and an opportunity to experience something new.
We can offer students guidance and advice on which activities are suitable for each section. They should be activities that the students find challenging, but at the same time rewarding and enjoyable. Hartland offers the Duke of Edinburgh Award at either Bronze, Silver or Gold level. Students in Year 10 take the Bronze award, Year 11 the Silver and Years 12 and 13 the Gold award. Each award level is progressively more challenging and, upon completion of each level, they have the opportunity to progress to the next award.
We strongly recommend that all students in Year 10 and above take part in the International Award as it demonstrates that they have experienced a rounded, holistic education.
